Understand Waterproof and Breathability Ratings for Outdoor Apparel
Looking for the ideal waterproof and breathable outdoor wear? Choosing the right gear for outdoor adventures involves understanding waterproof and breathability ratings, which may determine the performance and comfort of your clothing. In this blog, we'll demystify these ratings, explain their measurement, and help you select the perfect gear.
Understanding Waterproof Ratings
The industry-standard waterproof rating, known as the hydrostatic head (HH), measures how much water pressure a fabric can withstand before leaking. Rated in millimeters (mm), a higher rating indicates greater waterproofness. For example, a rating of 10,000mm means the fabric can resist a 10-meter column of water.
Here's a breakdown of common waterproof ratings:
- 5,000mm and below: Lightweight and packable, these jackets offer protection against light showers and drizzles, making them ideal as a backup option.
ororo Heated Hunting Collelction (waterproof rating 5000mm)
- 10,000mm: Providing commendable waterproofing capabilities, these jackets are suitable for enduring average snowfall and constant rain. The performance is at a regular level, and they can withstand moderate pressure.
ororo Women’s Heated Ski Jacket (waterproof rating 10000mm)
- 20,000mm: Designed to conquer wet snow and heavy rain, these jackets offer superior waterproofing. With exceptional resistance to moisture, they excel when subjected to high-pressure environments.
Understanding Breathability Ratings
Breathability is crucial for comfort during physical activities. It allows moisture and sweat to escape from inside the jacket. Breathability is measured as the Moisture Vapor Transmission Rate (MVTR) in grams (g). The rating represents the amount of moisture that can pass through a square meter of fabric in 24 hours.
Here's what to look for:
- 0 g/m²/24hr: Minimal or no breathability, best for light use or as emergency rain protection.
- 5,000 g/m²/24hr - 10,000 g/m²/24hr: Moderate breathability, suitable for low-intensity activities general outdoor use like resort skiing and urban travel.
- 10,000 g/m²/24hr - 15,000 g/m²/24hr: Good breathability, ideal for moderate-intensity activities like hiking or cycling.
- 15,000 g/m²/24hr and above: Very high breathability for intense activities such as trail running or mountaineering.
Balancing Waterproofness and Breathability in Outdoor Wear
Normally, Waterproof breathable fabrics consist of a protective outer layer, called the face fabric, typically made of nylon or polyester, and a laminated membrane, usually made of ePTFE (Teflon®) or PU. The membrane features micropores that allow sweat vapor to escape while blocking rainwater. As you perspire, hot and humid air inside the jacket migrates through these micropores to the cooler, less humid outside air.
While a waterproof/breathable membrane will stop water from penetrating to a rain jacket's interior, a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) is also needed to prevent precipitation from saturating the jacket's exterior. Maintaining the DWR finish is crucial for breathability; when it wears off, the saturated fabric impairs breathability. Regular washing and renewing of the DWR finish are necessary as dirt, oils, and abrasion degrade it over time.
Keep in mind that fabric is only one aspect that impacts a jacket's performance. Factors like seam sealing, fabric lining, hood design, and ventilation features (e.g., underarm zips and vents) also play a significant role in keeping you dry. In addition to improving the construction and fabric of your jacket, you can also carry a lightweight insulating layer along the way and adjust your clothing as needed.
